This Silence: story

This was the last song written for “Through the Wires,” which seems appropriate as it’s the last song (Stop Bringin’ Me Down being a ‘bonus track’).

Out of the batch of songs that make up the album, there was no closing track. So one day, I opened a notebook at my piano, and this song came out, and it was right. It was one of the more effortless songs I’ve written, and I still feel that it closes the album nicely, given the heavy emphasis I personally placed on theme throughout. Some of the lyrics had been kicking around for a while, particularly the first lines:

Her voice on the wires, across the ocean, static sound
Her words on the wire, across the sky, underground

And the rest followed at the time of writing. I think in terms of lyrical content, it was the last of a series of songs I had written about something and someone very important to me at that time. Another good reason for it to be the last song on the album.

If I remember correctly, the piano was recorded at The Musicbox, then re-done at Raindrop Recording, and then treated at Wavelight Studios (we could not stay put for that album!). The drums, bass, and vocal were all done at Wavelight (I personally think this song contains the best drum sound on the record).
