Streetcars
Up through the pavement
Came the old streetcar tracks
I guess the cold of this century
Brought the last one back
And amidst the asphalt
And the old cobblestones
I heard the echoes of a younger city
That now I call home
And just down the road
Back in 1933
They closed up the gates
On the cemetery
Where they buried those of the blood
That runs through my veins
Souls I never saw
Who are now just my middle names
Come over Evelyn
Lay down by my side
Our fire may go out
At least we’ll have tried
There’s nothing to us
Just a light that won’t last
But we shine the brighter
If we remember the past
And know that we own this day
We should know that own this day
By now…
Down from the sky
Comes a glorious rain
It dries up to rise up
And then falls down again
It falls on the houses
On the stories that we share
It falls on the churches
And the crosses they bear
Up from the ground
Comes the life of the earth
The trees in my backyard
That have been growing with me since birth
They carry the notches
Of those I’ll never know
The only proof they were here
Long after they go
Chorus
