The Future is an Ocean

I read the names
That belonged to faces no longer here
Gone for a century
Or just since last year

Faded Etchings
On crumbling stone
The last stands
Of flesh and bone

As the sun shot through
The silent trees
I walked amongst headstones
And the august breeze

And I thought of beginnings
And where our end would lie
I thought of you and I

Is that line on the horizon
Just a line we’ll never cross?
Have we collected all our winnings
To prepare us for a loss?
Have we crossed off all our options
Do we know now how to fail?
Or is the future just an ocean
You’ve gotta be brave enough to sail?
Gotta be brave enough to sail

She’s so full of life
But with a hungry heart
And I’ve loved her from the start

Will we make it through?
These things you never know
But I made the mistake
Of asking about tomorrow
