Been holding onto this one for a bit, but the day’s almost here. What if Sigur Ros played a folk club? What if Newfoundland music was cinematic score? One week from today, featuring the excellent Rachel Cousins.

I spent last winter reno-ing the wood floor baseme I spent last winter reno-ing the wood floor basement of our new house in the heart of downtown and designing a sweet one room studio space with my dad. I used to be the guy who could only change a lightbulb. Now, I know (slightly) more than that!

From June onward, it has been pretty busy in here. I've gotten to work with some really sweet folks, including David Chafe and Matthew Cooper, The Duds, Soundbone Traditional Arts Foundation, Target Marketing, and a bunch more. I've got stuff in the oven right now with drummer/brother in arms Nick Coultas-Clarke - Drummer and Rachel Cousins Music and a couple of others for the new year, along with new music from yours truly.

During a tough year, this space has been a sanctuary. It's nice to be surrounded by old trees in the old town while I work.

Interested in making music in the new year? I'd love to chat about your project. Drop me a line. We'll grab coffee upstairs on the break and I'll fire up the woodstove.

When I think of my favourite music, the common thr When I think of my favourite music, the common thread is that it has successfully created a world that existed before me, will exist after me, and the joy is getting to explore it while I’m here. The sensation is genreless: Joe Henry, Elbow, Olafur Arnalds, U2. Ron Hynes is also one of those writers. It is somewhat of an X Factor, but there are common elements: a strong sense of place, fearless specificity in the lyric or sound, subtle elements that reward future listens, and a commitment to a longer dialogue with the listener than one random 3.5 minute pop song, even though those are the building blocks that build the castle. It’s a trip to know I actually knew this particular artist personally. Performed in the same rooms, wrote a song together, had him offer tips and advice over the years. Suggestions on how to hopefully build a castle of my own. I’ve got six years of questions I wish I could ask him. RIP, Ron.

Shout outs to past collaborators Richard Bradley at Long Range Mastering and graphic artist Kyle McDavid, who also worked on this project.
